Learning in childcare

Learning in childcare

The Ole Schoolhouse childcare offers a creative and homely learning environment within a heritage setting. Our educational philosophy draws on current international research and best practice. We develop our curriculum through observation of children’s interests with the aim to enhance opportunities for social development and to foster a love of learning. CLICK HERE to download a leaflet. Young children are active learners from birth. They learn through play and through positive and supportive interactions with others. Intelligence is not fixed at birth but rather our brain changes as a result of our experiences.

Childcare is learning together

We seek to grow effective learners through developing a capacity to know how to learn. Key ingredients in this process include developing these positive learning dispositions:

  • Confidence
  • Cooperation
  • Communication
  • Curiosity
  • Perseverance/Persistence
  • Resourcefulness
  • Creativity

How do we grow positive dispositions?

Positive dispositions are acquired from and affected by interactive experiences with the environment, significant adults and peers. They are linked to secure attachments and wellbeing and hence it follows that dispositions grow within relationships. The responses that children get reinforce the growth of their dispositions. What is our goal?

People who are ready, willing and able to engage with learning
People who are socially just citizens of New Zealand
